Health optimization and Food addiction

A better understanding of your health to optimize your overall well-being

The health optimization approach is part of a process aimed at better understanding your current state of health, both physiologically, hormonally, metabolically, and psychologically. Together, we can better identify the steps to take to optimize your overall well-being, prevent the onset or progression of disease, and age as healthily as possible.

We have gained around ten years in life expectancy since the 1960s, but only 1 to 3 more years in good health. This means that most of us will end up living 10 to 15 years with a greatly reduced quality of life, in poor health and losing our independence. It is this aspect of healthspan, or healthy life expectancy, over which we have real control.

By understanding what influences our current health, we can make targeted changes and focus our energy in the right places as we work to modify our lifestyle habits. In this regard, thyroid health, sex hormones, insulin resistance, sleep, stress management, and muscle mass are major factors that have a much greater impact than our family history.

We are not doomed to be sick, even if our family history is heavy. Seventy percent or more of what will happen to us is determined by our lifestyle habits and not by our genetics. It is what we do with this information that counts. A complete health assessment, consideration of all relevant factors, and appropriate support will allow us to take back control of our health! A therapeutic approach to reducing carbohydrates is frequently used in this process to decrease insulin resistance, inflammation, and cravings.

Dr. Leduc Arbour does not take on clients who consult her as a family doctor, but rather supports them either on an ad hoc or longer-term basis, depending on their needs, in their efforts to optimize their health.

Compulsion and food addiction

We approach the issues of compulsive eating, overweight, and binge eating from a completely different angle: that of addiction. You are not to blame: your brain is being held hostage by sugar and processed foods.

Experts in obesity, eating disorders, and metabolic diseases—doctors, researchers, and psychologists—have been exploring for decades the origin of the powerlessness that many people experience in their relationship with food, particularly sugar and processed foods. Science now clearly shows that the brain, and more specifically the reward circuit, reconfigures itself in the same way in people who lose control with food as in those addicted to other psychoactive substances, such as alcohol, nicotine, or drugs.

Therefore, traditional approaches based on calorie restriction, moderation, or intuitive eating may not be an appropriate treatment for some people. It is estimated that between 15% and 30% of the population has an addictive relationship with food.

Treatment must therefore take into account all the factors involved: blood sugar stability, insulin resistance, emotional and environmental triggers, the impact of stress and fatigue, and eating habits. For some people, reducing carbohydrates and excluding problematic foods can bring peace of mind, allowing them to work on other aspects. The treatment plan is always personalized and evolves over time.

After graduating from the University of Sherbrooke with a degree in family medicine in 2007, Dr. Leduc Arbour worked for 15 years in perinatal care and family follow-up in group medical practices and delivery rooms in the Laurentians.

She has always been interested in prevention and supporting her patients in taking charge of their health and regaining their power during pivotal moments in their lives. Unfortunately, the current healthcare system is overwhelmed, and the burden of chronic diseases considered inevitable did not allow her to take the time with people to explore the causes of their discomfort and help them acquire new tools to take back control of their health. It is therefore essential to use an approach that takes into account all the aspects involved: blood sugar stability/metabolic health, emotional and environmental triggers, eating disorders, etc.

Following her own battle with morbid obesity since her early twenties, Dr. Leduc Arbour explored every avenue to free herself from obsession and shame. It was through her own struggles with mental health issues, severe food addiction, and thyroid and hormonal problems that she acquired a range of expertise and a deep sense of humanity.

This led her to choose to reorient her practice and join the CMIE team in 2024 to practice a different kind of medicine with the goal of empowering people to understand their health status and transform it.
