Compulsion and food addiction clinic

A new way to treat certain health problems

Here we address the problems of food compulsion, overweight and overeating with a completely different angle: that of addiction.

What is food addiction?

Food addiction is the loss of control over what you eat, regardless of the amount and type of food. It is also coupled with the impression of not being able to stop.  When compulsion is common and generates distress, it can develop into an eating disorder.

Experts in obesity, eating disorders, metabolic diseases; doctors, researchers and psychologists have been exploring for decades the origin of the impotence experienced by so many people in relation to food, especially sugar and processed foods.

Finally, science explodes to show that the brain, more precisely the reward center, is reconfigured in the same way in people who lose control with food as with other psychoactive substances such as alcohol, nicotine or drugs.

Thus, traditional treatments of calorie restriction, moderation, intuitive diet, may, for some people, not at all be the right treatment. It is estimated that between 15 and 30% of people would have an addictive relationship with food.

Global medicine and health optimization

The global medicine and health optimization approach aims to better understand your current state of health, including your physiological, hormonal, metabolic, and psychological well-being.  This will enable us to work together to identify the best course of action to optimize your overall well-being, prevent the onset or progression of disease, and age as healthily as possible.

We have gained about ten years of life expectancy since the 1960s, but only 1-3 years of good health.  This means that most of us will end up living 10-15 years with a very poor quality of life, sick and losing our independence. It is this aspect of “healthspan,” or healthy life expectancy, over which we have a great deal of control.  By understanding what influences our current health, we can make targeted changes to focus our energy in the right place in our efforts to change our lifestyle habits.  Thyroid health, sex hormones, insulin resistance, sleep, stress management, and muscle mass are major factors that have a much greater impact than our family history.

We are not doomed to be sick even if we have a family history of disease. 70% or more of what happens to us is determined by our lifestyle habits, not our genetics.  It’s what we do with this information that counts.  A complete health assessment, consideration of all relevant factors, and appropriate support will enable us to take back control of our health!

Dr. Leduc Arbour does not take on clients who consult her as a family doctor, but rather supports them either on an ad hoc or longer-term basis, depending on their needs, in their efforts to optimize their health.

Dre Nathaël Leduc Arbour

  • Addictive relationship or food compulsion with or without obesity
  • Food and sugar dependence
  • Binge eating disorder
  • Optimization of health, improvement of chronic diseases with healthy lifestyle, low carb or ketogenic diet

After graduating from the University of Sherbrooke with a degree in family medicine in 2007, Dr. Leduc Arbour worked for 15 years in perinatal care and family follow-up in group medical practices and delivery rooms in the Laurentians.

She has always been interested in prevention and supporting her patients in taking charge of their health and regaining their power during pivotal moments in their lives. Unfortunately, the current healthcare system, which is on its last legs, and the burden of chronic diseases considered inevitable did not allow her to take the time with people to explore the causes of their discomfort and help them acquire new tools to take back control of their health.

Following her own battle with morbid obesity since her early twenties, Dr. Leduc Arbour explored every avenue to free herself from obsession and shame. It was through her own struggles with mental health issues, severe food addiction, and thyroid and hormonal problems that she acquired a range of expertise and a deep sense of humanity.

This led her to choose to reorient her practice and join the CMIE team in 2024 to practice a different kind of medicine with the goal of empowering people to understand their health status and transform it.
